This one is for Amy in her quest to find all of the news on The Dendy Cinema in Newtown...
For those who live in Sydney and are unaware of the fantastic work of Dendy Cinemas, here's a little background. The first thing to note its they are an art house cinema chain that have a few sites around the place (Melbourne, Brisvegas, Sydney etc) and are dedicated to bringing films that aren’t fortunate enough to have a massive multi-million dollar advertising budget (like the Da Vinci Code) to the screen. Unfortunately for most people in the business of making film, there isn't too much of an opportunity for their work to get shown and appreciated by others, outside of film festivals like the Sundance, Cannes or the Sydney Film Festival. This is exactly where the cinema arm of Dendy comes in and lends a hand to those film makers. Dendy also has a distributing arm, known as Dendy Films, that allows small films to get out there for some exposure in retail and video stores for the benefit of art house cinema.
Now Cibby could probably tell you a thing or two about art house cinema, but unfortunately I’m no expert on the subject - however, i do know a good think when i see it. A ticket price of $10.50 for students is definitely a good thing, compared to an establishment like Hoyts where the price of a ticket is $12.50 for a student and the popcorn comes at the price of a precious, precious arm (or something like $10 in money language). So from a price perspective, it’s got my vote.
There are a huge number of things on and coming up at the Dendy, but there is no way i can tell you about all of them. However, I will suggest that you check out when it opens at the Dendy on June 29th - this is the film that opens the Sydney Film Festival and was well received at the Cannes film festival. It looks like a fantastic film that I'm sure you will enjoy. Read more about it on the official site here.
