The Annandale Hotel - Annandale
July 12th 2006 04:50
I decided I needed to write another Venue Review to break up the comedy and music that I've been posting about recently and to follow up the review of the Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills. Finding an excellent live music venue in Sydney in a lot of way is like finding a good mechanic. You want to make sure you find the right one, they're rare, and when you do find one you can never go to another mechanic. Nor can you move away. Ever.
I think this gives a reasonable explanation as to why there are so many people in Annandale and it has nothing to do with the mechanics.
The Annandale Hotel
Location
The Annandale hotel is located in a fairly convenient position on Parramatta road (cnr Nelson rd) at Annandale, along a fairly prominent bus route. While it's not really within walking distance of the city centre or trains, the bus option is still a pretty good one. The other awesome thing about the Annandale Hotel's location is that it's surrounded by music stores, so many guitars in the one place is heaven to a muso. Im not sure which came first, the venue or the 4 or 5 places selling instruments but a big thumbs up for the Annandale for being so convenient.
Street Appeal
You don’t really get much of an impression of the Annandale from the outside; it just looks like any other pub. That is except for huge billboard facing the street with the upcoming bands, a sight which i am often impressed by. The Annandale gets a shitload of awesome talent.
Venue Atmosphere
The 'Dale is full of history and a whole load of excellent local and international acts have graced the stage, giving the venue a well used and well loved feel. Of the few times ive been there, i haven’t actually explored the venue all that much, nor have i been there in the light hours. To me, and many many other people, the Annandale hotel is all about the music... well that and a little drinking. As a place to sit, drink and have a chat with friends, you may be in the wrong place past 7pm. As a live music venue, this place rocks hard. The also have a 3am licence so you can have a few drinks after a gig too.
Music
The Annandale hotel is all about the music, the windows are blacked out (as to give summer afternoon gigs that feeling of night time) the stage is right next to a bar and the live music room has virtually nothing else in it. If you go to the Annandale, you go for the music, and what music. The 'Dale bring in some of the best Aussie and international rock acts around, and the tickets aren’t to badly priced either!
Summary
One of the sweetest live music venues around. Get on a bus on a Friday or Saturday night and head down to the 'Dale! “F*#! THIS! I'M GOING TO THE ANNANDALE!!”
