Miss Earth Australia Beauty Pageant

This event was just too hillarious to pass up! Since Jennifer Hawkins won the 2004 Miss Universe Pageant there has been a lot of fuss made about beauty pageants here in Australia. Even the premise behind something like 'Miss Earth' I find ridiculous but maybe there is something good in it, this from the website:
Contestants, who become part of Miss Earth Australia, are savvy, goal-oriented and environmentally aware, displaying those characteristics in their everyday lives. They are also committed to playing a part in preserving the environment for future generations.
Oh and this from the Ticketek site:
The Australian winner will be sent to Santiago Chile where she will plant trees, clean up beaches, visit the children of poor families, engage in public speaking and otherwise represent our commitment to Saving The World.
Nope, still don't quite understand why it has anything to do with looks... Why hold a beauty pageant to decide who to send overseas to clean up rubbish? If anyone could clarify this for me, I would really appreciate it!
If you are actually interested in checking it out, the pageant will be held at the Enmore Theatre on Wednesday, 20th of September, tickets are $25 through Ticketek. Find the official Miss Earth site here.

FYI, beauty gives you special powers to save the environment. This is also why the opinions of rock stars and actors are so valuable.

Miss Earth LogoMiss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant founded in the year 2001 by Carousel Productions Inc. of the Philippines. Its organizer created the pageant after losing the rights to continue producing for the Miss Asia-Pacific pageant. It became one of the largest beauty pageants in the world since it's conception five years ago.
The delegates and winners give meaning and relevance to this beauty competition by promoting worthwhile environmental causes and getting actively involved in caring for and the preservation of Mother Earth. In addition to its environmental objectives, the winner of Miss Earth is involved with international environmental projects. During pageant month (2005), Carousel brings the Miss Earth delegates to selected tourism destinations, like Fort Ilocandia, Intramuros, Bohol, and Boracay in the Philippines to showcase and promote the same to the pageant's international viewers. The delegates also take part in treeplanting ceremonies, environmental and cultural immersion programs, sponsor visits and tours, and even a Survivor-like competition.
The court of runner ups are bestowed titles named after the other natural elements: Miss Earth Fire (equivalent to third runner-up), Miss Earth Water (second runner-up), and Miss Earth Air (first runner-up).
In the last 5 years, the pageant was held in October or November, in Manila, Philippines and televised nationwide via ABS CBN with international telecasts on STAR TV and The Filipino Channel.
Miss Earth gained worldwide press in 2003 after Vida Samadzai, an Afghan woman now residing in the United States, competed in a red bikini. Samadzai was the first Afghan woman to compete in an international beauty pageant in almost three decades, but the fact that she wore a bikini caused an uproar in her Islamic native country.
The 2005 pageant was held on October 23, drawing the participation of 80 countries from all over the world. The 2005 pageant was supposed to mark the end of the Philippines' hosting of the pageant. They have hosted the pageant for five years since its inception in 2001.
Miss Earth 2006 was scheduled to be held in Santiago, Chile on November 15, but organizational and funding problems forced moving the pageant back to the Philippines, where it was held on November 26. Interestingly, the winner was Miss Chile, Hil Hernández from Chiloé Island.

Daly, CA (Hush Press) July 23, 2007 -- Like every success story, it starts with a humble beginning. And for the Miss Earth Pageant, it all started with a humble ambition of saving the environment.
In 2001, the Manila-based events company Carousel Productions, Inc. decided to create a brand new approach in promoting environmental awareness, and eventually came up with an effective channel - a beauty pageant. Thereafter, the Miss Earth pageant was born.
Initially, everyone thought it would just be another international beauty competition, but because of its environmental platform, Miss Earth created a noticeable mark in the pageant world and earned international respect. Thus, in Miss Earth, beauty is not the main factor, but a vehicle to promote environmental awareness and human concern.
Year after year, the Miss Earth pageant grew, with growing number of countries participating and more international attention received. And in 2004, Miss Earth was recognized by the international beauty pageant critics as one of top three grand slam pageants, taking the Japan-based Miss International out of the league.
In 2005, Miss Earth was declared the most anticipated beauty event in the world for having the most competitive set of candidates (compared to its grand slam colleagues Miss Universe and Miss World). As a result, Miss Earth's worldwide television broadcast in Star World gained the highest rating ever on any beauty event with its official website (www.missearth.tv) getting a phenomenal popularity rate.
Elsewhere in the world, the pageants popularity has continuously increased. With more women wanting to become Miss Earth, the number of national Miss Earth pageant has grown on every continent as well. At present, Miss Earth holds the record of having the greatest number of national-level contests, and continuously growing.
Miss Earth nowadays is also considered as the toughest international beauty contest. From the quality of candidates to the selection process, the pageant organizers have the most scrupulous criteria. Seemingly never-ending interviews with hard to answer questions are always on the way to the crown.
The 6th edition of Miss Earth erased the records of its previous years. Miss Earth 2006 was more publicized and much more competitive girls vied for the crown. It was a real success story despite the mishaps Carousel Productions had when the supposedly host country Chile failed to meet the requirements of the host committee.
Failure of holding the pageant off the Philippine shores was behind Miss Earth. They have to stage it back to Manila with a promise that "grand and prestigious" it will be. And Miss Earth fulfilled its promise. It was an astounding finals night at the National Museum in Manila, leaving every viewer spectacled with the event.
Behind all the success Miss Earth has gained and is continuously gaining, its environmental cause was never forgotten. The Miss Earth winner tours and works worldwide as spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental groups. Moreover, national Miss Earth winners from various nations are doing their own part in their home countries.
Now on its seventh year, the Miss Earth pageant may have been floating on the sky of success, yet it has kept its feet on the grounds of a planet she has promised to heal.
