FourPlay - Classically Cool

If you haven’t heard of FourPlay, you don’t deserve to exist.
Usually I think covers are a lame attempt at capturing some kind of engrained emotional response from the audience without putting too much effort into a performance, using a song everybody knows (ie "Land down under"), and will certainly sing along to. Sure, there's a difference between a good cover and a cheap one, but essentially there the same thing - cashing in on someone else's success so you look cool.
However there are some notable exemptions to my general principle on the dislike of covers. One of them is where an artist completely transforms the song, makes it there own and brings a whole new meaning to it that completely different audience can enjoy, an audience that may have otherwise had no appreciation for the original version (I sight here The Herd's cover of "I was only 19" originally penned and performed by Red Gum). The other exception from the rule is in the case of a String Quartet. Here I am obviously talking about FourPlay, the quartet that covers artists like Metallica, The Strokes, Miles Davis and Radiohead. This might seem like a bit of a cop out, I'm sure you're asking at this point "what makes a string quartet less cheap and cheesy?". Well, the answer is simple, it sounds cool. All rules aside, if something sounds cool, its probably is.
I first heard of FourPlay a few months ago, half-heard a tune and then didn't really think anything of it after that. Then a few weeks ago I was sitting on the train listening to Triple J and FourPlay's cover of The Strokes - Reptillia came on and completely blew me away. They had it down perfect. They had the beat, riff, bass line and vocals sounding brilliantly, I was completely amazed by the arrangement and couldn't get the tune out of my head all day. They are in a word Wonderful.
FourPlay are playing the Metro on the 8th of July, before moving on to brisvegas. I suggest you go and check them out. If you can't make it, then you better get yourself to their Myspace and take a listen to some of their beautiful work. Myspace. Website.
