You may not know him by name, but you will definitely know him by reputation. Craig Ruddy is the artist who, in 2004, won both the Archibald Prize and the People's Choice Awards in Sydney and Melbourne for his charcoal drawing of actor David Gulpilil. This year, his work Self Portrait - Into the Box was a finalist in the Archibald again.
His works are amazing, and in his latest exhibition, REMNANTS – of an urban landscape he captures and explores "the human mind as an open vast landscape obstructed by glimpses of perceived reality, etched with remnants of the past..." he writes in an artist's statement about the works.
Ruddy uses waste bins as a focus for the landscapes he creates, using them metaphorically and literally, "[l]ike ancient ruins, waste bins scattered throughout our urban landscapes become metaphors for the memories of their owners, the remnants that are left in ones mind by the constant flux of life...[t]hese landscapes could also be taken literally, reflecting a wasteland created by modern civilization. Stark, alluring and atmospheric with crisp vertical white lines suggesting a sterile, white picket fence existence..."
Somehow, Ruddy captures certain inexpressible feeling about modern consumerism, utilising the vessel of waste in a context of an expansive and empty landscape to force the viewer to consider consumerism in a wider context, which extends beyond simple throw away objects.
Craig Ruddy's latest exhibition will be showing at Richard Martin, Australian Fine Art, 98 Holdsworth St, Woollahra from the 5th to the 23rd of August Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm, Sunday 1pm-5pm.
