December 13th 2007 03:00
After the success of the 2007 Chinese New Year Festival where more than 600,000 people enjoyed a program of 40 events celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Pig, planning is already well underway for the 2008 festival which celebrates the year of the rat.
Featuring 40 events over three weeks, the City of Sydney's 2008 Chinese New Year Festival is shaping up to be the City's largest ever celebration of the Lunar New Year ever.
The official launch begins with a riot of noise and music in Belmore Park. Featuring Chinese entertainers and Lion and Dragon, Launch culminates in an explosion of traditional firecrackers to scare away evil spirits to ensure a prosperous new year for all.
The CNY parade takes place on February 10 from Park Street to Tumbalong Park in the City. Sydney's Chinatown streets will come alive with local and international musicians, acrobats, dragons and decorated floats for the Chinese New Year Parade.
On February 16 - 17, the Chinese New Year Dragon Boat Races will take place on Darling Harbour with sporting, social and corporate teams battling it out for the honours on the water. Chinese lions and dragons will be roaming through the site and there will also be plenty of Chinese foods and gifts on offer.
