...Ahhh, the desperation of speed dating...
Having a very limited range of life experience and current being in a long term relationship, i have never experienced the feeling of total hopelessness that often comes hand in hand with having difficulty on the dating scene. In certain circles, say the 35 and over category, being single is often like a disease... Coupled friends would rather dine with other coupled friends, mothers click their tongues in perpetual disgust, magazines and media are a constant barrage of expectations... sometimes its all to much...
Before you retreat into your world of Bridget Jones's Diary, My Best Friends Wedding or Sleepless in Seattle DVDs, ice-cream and eventual eating by Alsatians, consider your options. Firstly, you can lead the afore mentioned life and continue in a downward shame spiral of depression... I don’t really like that option. Secondly you can give Blink Speed Dating a try.
Basically, the theory behind it is if you chuck a whole bunch of single people together, give them plenty of booze and food, charge them a large fee and eventually everyone will get together, if not because they genuinely found someone, but because of the huge expectations of the night. Then these ex-singles write a nice little testimonial for Blink Dating that they can use to snare other singletons. This is what the promotion site had to say:
"You will meet 10 people of the opposite sex over drinks and nibbles at a stylish location. After each 7 minute speed date, you indicate on your private 'match card' who you would like to meet again. If both parties are interested (a mutual match) then you receive each others' contact details the next day. 87% of participants score at least one mutual match!"
What an excellent idea! And quite a money maker too, the site charges $59 a pop. However, one could argue that if you meet the person of your dreams, it was money well spent.
Good, all happiness to you.
There is a third option. Try this one; say for instance you like Art? How about you go to an art gallery, see someone by themselves and talk to them! You can spend 7 minutes with them and if you don’t like what they have to say, offer a polite "thankyou for the chat" and move on! You're really into fine wine? Go on a wine tasting tour and try the above strategy! And if it works for you, you can send me $30 if you really want to pay someone for the pleasure.
What do you readers think? Do you think $60 is worth 70 minutes of meeting people with some food and nibbles? How much is self confidence an issue in the dating scene? Is it something that can be overcome by simply throwing money at some company and hoping that someone else can solve your troubles with dating?
If Blink Speed Dating was appealing to you, find more information Here. Events in Sydney are held on May 27th, June 1st, and June 15th.
Good luck singles!

i would still have to get up off my butt
however, i could use that $60, to take a girl out, and it won't cheapen the whole dating thing by meeting at a speed dating centre

its cheaper, you have an instant conversation point and you can easily retreat if you suddenly hate them.
