Well I was going to write a double update because of the severe lack of time i had at the end of this week to write some quality. Unfortunately things do not always go to plan, for instance, on of the events on my top 10 list, the end of fashion gig is sold out. I could still write about it, but that would be lazy and I would prefer to write about something useful anyway.
I'm not sure how to take Ben Harper. I listen to Triple J (jjj) all the time and they featured his new album, 'Both Sides Of The Gun', a few weeks ago and i really don’t think it quite lives up to a lot of his earlier stuff. However, things change and perspectives change, it’s impossible to fault a musician because they don’t play music the way they once had. The artist is no longer the same person they were the last time they released an album, and reflecting that is their change in musical perspective.
I think Ben Harper is a fine example of that. Back in his earlier days, he was much more of a roots artist, not putting virtually no emphasis on mastering or production, rather creating a sound that directly emulated the rhythm from his soul and what he found at that time was roots. Again, times change, but to help ease the transition, the new album is a double, one CD has his new style and the other is a stripped back acoustic CD that reconnects with what listeners initially found intriguing at their very first encounter with Harper.
I think his gig at the Sydney Entertainment Centre is worth a look-in. Tickets are pretty good for the EnCent ($80) and if you've ever been a fan of Ben Harper, even though he may have changed to reflect a different stage of his artistry, you will enjoy the show.
