Bass Hill Greater Union Drive-In Theatre

July 4th 2006 06:45
Well as exams are finally over now, it's time for the uni students to seek out the cheapest possible thrills. For some, this means having a shower, or sitting in a pub with friends (while getting free drinks from other people's rounds and then scampering off before it's your turn). There is however a whole load of cheap things to do in Sydney, for instance you can see two movies for $10... Provided you bring your own seats...

Drive in Cinema
Drive-in's in Australia are few and far between, the came to out shores in the 50's and gained massive popularity in the following decades (the intimacy of a car with the cheapness of the cinema minus the dude with the flash light) only to die a slow death where people found more exciting things to do. Now there are only a few outdoor drive-in cinemas operating in Sydney (apart from special event stuff), with two Greater Union Cinemas at Bass Hill and Blacktown.

You may think that drive-ins are lame and horrible... but where else can a uni-student see a movie for $10 let alone two? The drive-in’s have obvious pros and cons:

Pros:
- Cheap! Two movies 10 bucks!
- No sticky floors/seats
- No annoying laughing or inappropriate talking
- Comfy custom seats
- Individual Temperature Control
- Easy parking
- No lost or stolen car

Cons:
- Your car might smell funny
- If you’re a uni student chances are your bomb has crap heating (like mine)

- The windscreen gets foggy
- Horrible for a first date, there is no escape for the non-driver
- Getting stuck behind 4WD
- Weather dependant

So consider the Pro's and Con's, visit the website to see what's showing and go jump in your car for a cheap, cheap night!

but there's one in blacktown too if thats any closer for you... it only takes 40mins on the train to get to blacktown from central... but then i guess that would defeat the purpose of the drive in...

I've never been to one, are they any good cib?

it's a fantastic experience... I went to one in Canada before it shut down. It's just cool to sit in your car, with your own food, talking or fooling around, while the movie's on.

Maybe since it's not popular, that's why it's so appealing..

Tonight I am taking my 2 grandsons, 1 grand daughter, 1 son and his wife to a drive in as they have never been to one. I am so delighted that I found one nearby. They are so much more relaxing than a indoor cinema. Where else could you get away with going to the movies with your PJ's or watch from your lounge chair on the back of your truck. And certainly cheaper.

Bass Hill Drive In ceases trading on Wednesday 31/10/07 (this is the last night ever before it becomes a new housing development. Tuesday is their regular budget night, $9 a head as opposed to $14.
Blacktown will be the only one left in Sydney.
