A Special Request...: The Loves

A friend of mine emailed me and suggested that I write about something that was "non-gay" here, which I take a little offence to, implying that I’ve been writing about "gay" things!
However, along with his criticism he did in fact make a pretty good suggestion - that I inform you all about a few gigs a local "Cock Rock" band were doing around the Sydney area in the next few weeks. That band is of course, The Loves. Now I've never heard of The Loves, and by the hit counter on their Myspace I would hazard a guess that most people do not know about The Loves either. At this point you may be asking, what the hell is "Cock Rock" anyway? Well, it's exactly how it sounds, its long hair, tight leather pants, songs about 'chicks' and anything 'rock n 'roll', it's most certainly a throwback to the 70's and 80's style of rock - big riffs, tight and fast solos, singing with little if any skill etc. Cock Rock is engrained in beer and footy culture.
The Loves are a perfect example of a Cock Rock outfit, (I'm cringing just looking at the songs on their Myspace "Rock n' roll ride", "Rock Chick", "Backseat Lovin" and "Go Hard or Go Home"), they have the leather and the shades, they have plenty of photos with the band surrounded by women and their songs slot perfectly into the genre. However, as much as I try to distance myself from the music, I have to admit, they are tight. The songs they have on their Myspace are polished - The have a good sound that isn’t all horrible to the ear. From what I hear they started off as a two piece and the other guys just joined in for a bit of a good time, a feeling you definitely get from the music. They don't seem to take themselves too seriously but they still manage to belt out a half decent tune.
So in the next few weeks, if you’re feeling a little on the seedy side and need a bit of rock to help you get through the night, give The Loves a bit of a look in. Their playing the Cat and Fiddle in Balmain on June 21st, The Harp Hotel in Tempe on July 6th and at O'Donohues in Emu Plains on the 13th of July. You can also listen to their tracks and look at more pretty pictures right here on their Myspace.
